The prize fund for the women’s T20 World Cup, which takes place next month, has been increased by an incredible 225% to USD 7.95 million. This is a historic decision made by the International Cricket Council.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in a statement that the women’s T20 World Cup winners would get USD 2.34 million from this fund, which is a 134% increase over the USD one million given to the Australian women when they won the championship in Africa in 2023.

According to the ICC, “the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will mark a significant milestone in the sport’s history as the first ICC event where women will receive the same prize money as their male counterparts.”

After South Africa advanced to the final on home soil at Newlands Cricket Ground, they will get USD 1.17 million, a 134% gain over the USD 500,000 awarded to the runners-up at the main tournament next month.

Both of the losing semi-finalists will get USD 675, 000 (up from USD 210 000 in 2023), and the total prize money will be USD 7,958,080, a huge increase of 225% over the USD 2.45 million total fund from the previous year.

Teams that win during the group stages will receive USD 31,154, while the six teams that do not advance to the semi-finals will split a pool of USD 1.35 million based on their placement. This is in contrast to the USD 180,000 equivalent pool that the six teams in 2023 shared equally. Teams that place third or fourth in their group will receive USD 270,000 each, while teams that place fifth in their group will receive USD 135,000.

The ICC’s plan to give the women’s game priority and quicken its growth by 2032 is consistent with this action. Teams will now get the same amount of money for winning a match at such tournaments as well as for finishing in the same place in similar events, according to the ICC.

From October 3 to October 20, two locations in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai and Sharjah, will host the tournament’s ninth edition.

All group games will be finished by October 15 at the latest. The final is set for October 20, with the semi-finals taking place on October 17 and 18.
