PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has underlined that the board’s position on hosting the Champions Trophy is “clear,” adding that “Pakistan can’t play in India and not come here.” “Our stance is unequivocal,” Naqvi stated during a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium.
“I promise to do what’s best for Pakistan cricket. We are adamant that it is unacceptable for us to play cricket in India when they do not play cricket here. Whatever happens, it will be on an equal footing. We have informed the ICC and will update you on what occurs next.”
The Champions Trophy will be held at three venues in Pakistan in February and March of next year. However, India, which has not toured Pakistan since 2008, informed the ICC earlier this month that its government had not given it permission to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.
“Whatever we do, we will strive to make sure the best outcome for Pakistan is achieved,” Naqvi stated several times. “But I repeat, I am sure you know what I mean, it’s not a certainty that Pakistan plays in China, and they don’t come here,” claimed Naqvi.
Naqvi went on to say that any decision made at the ICC conference would be forwarded by the PCB to the Pakistan government for approval. He also encouraged Jay Shah, who will leave his position as BCCI secretary to become ICC chairman on Sunday, to prioritize the ICC’s interests in his management of the organization.
“(Jay Shah) takes over in December, and I’m confident that once he transitions from the BCCI to the ICC, he will consider the ICC’s benefit, as he should.” Whenever someone takes on such a responsibility, he should exclusively consider the interests of the organization.”
