The vote tallying process is ongoing for the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. This time, the BJP’s stronghold from the previous two national polls is observing a closely fought contest between the NDA and the INDIA alliance, which includes the Samajwadi Party and the Congress.
At present, the NDA is leading in 37 constituencies (with the BJP ahead in 34, RLD in two, and Apna Dal (S) in one), while the INDIA alliance is leading in 42 constituencies (SP in 35 and Congress in seven), as per the latest updates from the Election Commission’s website. Chandrashekhar from the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) is leading in Nagina.
Notably, among the significant Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress heavyweight Rahul Gandhi, and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav are leading in Varanasi, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, and Kannauj, respectively.
Meanwhile, Union ministers Smriti Irani and Anupriya Patel (from Apna Dal (S)) and senior BJP figure Maneka Gandhi are trailing in Amethi, Mirzapur, and Sultanpur, respectively.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA secured a victory in 62 out of 80 seats, while the BSP and Samajwadi Party, who were allies then, won 10 and five seats, respectively.
