TMC MP charges Centre for West Bengal flood

On Monday, as the Union government announced flood relief for Gujarat, Tripura, and Manipur, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saket Gokhale stated West Bengal is experiencing “man-made” floods and has not gotten any central aid.

Gokhale accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre of prejudice in a post on X.

Once more, egregious discrimination. This evening, the Union government declared that Gujarat, Tripura, and Manipur would receive ₹675 crore in flood relief from the NDRF. Gokhale wrote in a post on X that West Bengal, which is suffering from catastrophic floods caused by man because of the Union government, has received no assistance.

“Lives in Gujarat are important for Modi but the lives of people of Bengal mean nothing to him. Why does Modi specifically hate Bengal so much? Is he the PM of Gujarat or the PM of India?” he questioned.

As an advance from the National Disaster Response Fund and the federal share from the State Disaster Response Fund, the Union government approved the release of ₹25 crore to Tripura, ₹50 crore to Manipur, and ₹600 crore to Gujarat on Monday. This year’s southwest monsoon has caused landslides, flooding, and abnormally high rainfall in several states.

According to the home ministry, this year’s very high rains, floods, and landslides have impacted Assam, Mizoram, Kerala, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Manipur. In each of these states, interministerial central teams have been assigned the task of assessing the damage immediately.

On September 20, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the Damodar Valley Corporation of “unilaterally releasing water,” which caused flooding in regions of south Bengal.

CM Mamata Banerjee stated that 50 lakh people in West Bengal had been impacted by the floods in a four-page letter to Modi, pleading with him to approve and deliver central funding right once to alleviate the deluge’s widespread destruction.
