New Delhi: The mastermind behind the murder of a prominent doctor in Jangpura, south Delhi, in May this year updated at least eight mobile phones and 20 SIM cards on the the run, police said today after apprehending him. The police claimed they pursued him for 1,600 kilometers, all the way to the India-Nepal border, where they apprehended the accused, Vishnuswaroop Shahi.

Vishnuswaroop Shahi also changed his name six times and used phony identity papers wherever he went, according to the police. They also uncovered papers with the names Vishnu Swaroop Shahi, Shakti Sai, Satya Sai, Surya Prakash Shahi, 

Yogesh Chandra Paul, 63, a doctor, was found murdered at his Jangpura house with his wife. While his body was recovered in the kitchen, the rooms showed evidence of devastation, implying robbery. The police

According to Crime Section Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Sen, the accused robbed the house before killing the doctor. He added that officials identified several additional suspect on CCTV cameras throughout the residence, indicating the involvement for more than one accused. The housekeeper, Basanti, and two others, Akash and Himanshu Joshi, were captured during the inquiries, but the mastermind, Vishnuswaroop Shahi, and four of his assistants remained on the run.

After taking over the investigation, the Crime Branch launched a wide-ranging search for the mastermind, during which some of Vishnuswaroop Shahi’s old mobile phone numbers were discovered, according to DCP. The Crime Branch examined the call detail records (CDR) for half a month and discovered new active numbers used by the accused, Mr Sen said, adding that Vishnuswaroop Shahi had replaced eight mobile phones and 20 SIM cards.

The police obtained information that Vishnuswaroop Shahi was hiding in Himachal Pradesh’s Suket valley, from which he intended to flee to Nepal. Before a police squad could reach his Himachal hideout, the culprit fled to Dehradun, according to the police.
