Israeli tanks were observed for the first time in the centre of Rafah, according to witnesses, marking a significant development three weeks into the ground operation in the southern part of Gaza City, which has attracted widespread international criticism.

Close to the Al-Awda mosque, a notable landmark in central Rafah, the presence of the tanks was reported by those on the ground to Reuters. In response to inquiries about the advancement into the city centre, the Israeli military stated that its operations in the Rafah vicinity were ongoing but did not provide specific comments.

The city endured a heavy onslaught of airstrikes and tank shelling overnight, as described by residents, with the Israeli forces intensifying their campaign despite global backlash following an attack on Sunday. This particular assault resulted in a fire at a tent camp, claiming the lives of at least 45 Palestinians, including a significant number of children, women, and elderly individuals. Following this incident, officials from the territory, which is under the control of Hamas militants, reported that Israeli fire had killed at least 26 more individuals in Rafah.

“Tank shells are hitting everywhere in Tel Al-Sultan. Numerous families have been forced to flee their homes in western Rafah, facing gunfire throughout the night,” shared one resident with Reuters via a chat application.

According to the health ministry in Gaza, the Israeli offensive has resulted in over 36,000 Palestinian casualties. The operation was initiated by Israel following attacks by Hamas-led militants on southern Israeli communities on October 7, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and the capture of over 250 hostages, as per Israeli reports.
