Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a historic visit to Kyiv, marking his first presence in Ukraine since his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow six weeks prior. This visit is seen as a milestone, given that Modi is the first Indian leader to set foot in Ukraine since its independence in 1991, and it carries heavy diplomatic expectations, especially regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Throughout his stay, the anticipation revolves around deepening cooperation between India and Ukraine across various sectors, including defense, economy, business, science, and technology.

Before embarking on his journey to Poland and Ukraine, PM Modi voiced India’s aspirations for the swift restoration of peace and stability in Ukraine. He reaffirmed India’s supportive friend and partner role, ready to help the region navigate its current challenges.

India’s balanced stance amidst the Ukraine conflict is noteworthy. Despite its historically strong ties with Russia, India has successfully maintained friendly relations with both Russia and Ukraine post-conflict onset.

President Zelenskyy’s outreach to Modi underscores India’s strategic global position and influence. This interaction aims to garner more comprehensive support and aid, highlighting the critical nature of Modi’s diplomatic endeavours.

During their bilateral talks at the G7 summit, PM Modi reassured of India’s commitment towards employing diplomatic channels to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

How has India responded to the Russia-Ukraine war?

In December 2022, President Zelenskyy sought India’s support for his “peace formula.” This request aligned with India’s broader trade engagement efforts with Russia, notably in oil purchases despite Western sanctions, which significantly bolstered President Putin amidst the conflict.

Zelenskyy broadcasted his appeal for India’s participation in the peace initiative over X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging India’s humanitarian contributions and its backing at the United Nations.

Earlier in March 2024, Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy had a conversation to bolster the India-Ukraine partnership in various realms. Modi reaffirmed India’s stance on promoting dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, reinforcing the commitment to a people-centric resolution approach and promising continued support for a peaceful settlement.

President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for India’s continued humanitarian support, and both leaders agreed to maintain close communication.
