Elon Musk's X names legal representative in Brazil amid ban woes

The lawyers for the company said on Friday that Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has designated a legal representation in Brazil. This is in reaction to the Supreme Court of Brazil’s mandate that the platform be allowed to go on business there.

Lawyers Andre Zonaro and Sergio Rosenthal revealed that their colleague, Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao, was selected for the role and her name has been submitted to the court.

According to Brazilian law, international businesses must appoint a legal representative to handle their local legal obligations. Up until the middle of August, X had a representative; however, after closing its Brazilian headquarters, it failed to choose a successor.

This resulted in a Supreme Court ruling to prohibit the platform in late August, and access was immediately revoked. Another requirement imposed by the court, the corporation has started to comply with the content removal orders, according to X’s attorneys.

The dispute started when Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, was sued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes for allegedly failing to control content that circulated false information and encouraged violence, especially in the wake of riots involving supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

De Moraes added Musk and X to the “Digital Militias Inquiry,” an ongoing probe that aims to counteract misinformation on the internet, in April 2024.

The judge charged Musk with undermining efforts to control online content and reactivating accounts that had been disabled without court permission. Judge de Moraes suspended X on August 30, 2024, in Brazil, citing the platform’s noncompliance with the need to designate a legal representation.
