The US Commerce Department is anticipated to propose new restrictions prohibiting the use of Chinese hardware and software in connected and autonomous vehicles on US roads.. According to Reuters, the idea, spurred by national security concerns, would prohibit the import and sale of autos from China that have communication or autonomous driving components.
The Biden administration has expressed alarm about how Chinese firms may obtain information about American drivers and infrastructure. There is also concern about foreign interference in autos connected to the internet and navigation systems that may be manipulated remotely. “The software was disabled.”
The proposed regulation would target Chinese technology in connected vehicles, such as cars that have built-in internet access and can exchange data with other devices.
The prohibition on Chinese software might come into place as early as the 2027 model year, while hardware limitations would most certainly take effect.
These bans would apply to vehicles having specified wireless features such as Bluetooth, satellite, and autonomous driving capabilities. The new law would also apply to other countries considered US rivals, such as Russia.
This measure is part of a larger escalation in US restrictions on Chinese exports. Last week, the Biden administration placed harsh duties on Chinese imports, including a 100% levy on electric cars (EVs) and higher levies on EV batteries and crucial minerals.
In February, President Biden launched an inquiry into whether Chinese cars and technology represented a threat to national security. He has since expressed significant opposition to permitting a flood of Chinese automobiles into the United States, stating, “I’m not going to let that happen on my watch.
