A close acquaintance of mine has been using Fold for a very long time and is now trying to update to the newest version. He inquired a few weeks ago as to whether waiting for the Fold6 would be wise. I promised to use my better judgment after receiving the review unit. Upon seeing the launch ceremony, I informed him that the Z Fold5 appeared to be a favorable purchase at the moment, given that its characteristics were mostly similar to those of the recently released Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6. It didn’t take him long to decide he was going to purchase the new Fold6 when he saw the review gadget in my hands a few days ago. That’s when I realized that opinions on products vary greatly at numerous.
The obvious differences between the Fold and the Galaxy Fold2 my buddy was using at the time contributed to his hasty choice. After using every Fold device since Samsung introduced the category more than five years ago, I must admit that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is now nearly flawless and just as small as the foldable we’ve seen from Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus.
The folded phone felt somewhat thicker in my hands than my normal phone, but not significantly heavier than some of the bigger smartphones I’ve handled lately. The Fold6 is lighter and slimmer than the Fold5.
When the phone is folded, there is almost little daylight visible between the two sides, which sets it apart from the Galaxy Fold5 (review) and previous iterations. Furthermore, the crease seems much more subdued upon opening. A user upgrading from an older Fold—or any Fold—will notice a change at this point, though I don’t believe owners of the Fold5 have compelling physical reasons to justify making the switch.
If you are coming from a previous generation Fold, you will also notice the amazing 7.6-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display and the slightly bigger 6.3-inch front screen, which are both the brightest on a Fold to date. It’s one thing to make amazing exhibits.
