Later this year, Qualcomm, a manufacturer of smartphone chips, plans to lay off 226 employees in San Diego. The layoffs will begin the week of November 12 by a notification released this week under California’s WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act. The San Diego Union-Tribune broke the story first.
The layoffs would affect staff across 16 of Qualcomm’s San Diego buildings, including its headquarters, which also house the company’s cybersecurity activities. It is unclear if members of the cybersecurity team would be affected, as Qualcomm has not offered explicit details on this.
A Qualcomm representative reportedly stated, “Our leading technology and product portfolio has positioned us to execute on our diversification strategy,” in a TechCrunch story.
We prioritize and coordinate our investments, resources, and personnel as part of our regular business operations to make sure we are best positioned to seize the exceptional diversification possibilities that are currently in front of us.”
This implies that the company’s choice is a component of a bigger business plan meant to reallocate resources to concentrate on fresh prospects. Less than a year has passed since Qualcomm eliminated over 1,250 positions. The business reported $35.8 billion in sales for 2023 despite these cuts, and Cristiano Amon, the CEO, received $23.5 million in total remuneration.
