Perplexity AI, an artificial intelligence-powered search engine, is looking into the prospect of releasing a voice-enabled AI gadget for roughly $50. The device would allow users to ask questions and receive responses through voice interaction.
Aravind Srinivas, founder and CEO, alluded to the idea on X (previously Twitter), writing, “Considering making a simple, under $50 hardware device that will reliably answer your questions voice to voice.” Simply do this, but do it exceptionally well.” He added that if the post received more than 5,000 likes, the company would proceed with the concept.
The post has already received over 8,000 likes, demonstrating high public interest in the future product. Srinivas’ concept elicited a flurry of reactions, revealing varying viewpoints on the device’s viability.
A reader had this viewpoint: “I don’t see the utility of it, especially since our phones are always on us anyway.” Another person expressed similar sentiments, saying, “Please, no more Rabbit R1.” We’ve already got smartphones, smartwatches, and smart eyewear. However, several users found fascinating uses, particularly among certain groups. “Learning,” according to one person.
Another user proposed a feature enhancement, stating, “I’d love a Perplexity gadget, but it would be more helpful if it could hold a discussion rather than just a single question/answer.” If it can keep context and facilitate in-depth discussions,
The announcement comes shortly after Srinivas spoke with X about the hurdles immigrants face when acquiring a green card in the United States. The conversation was sparked by a post by Rohit Krishnan, Chief Product Officer at bodo.ai, which emphasized the difficult and time-consuming process of gaining permanent residency. Many participants found the chat intriguing since it shed light on the immigration obstacles that aspiring US residents confront.
