Elon Musk addresses participants via videoconference during the 8th edition of the Vivatech technology startups and innovation fair, at the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre in Paris.

According to a recent report by The Information, Elon Musk has shared plans with investors about his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, which is taking on an ambitious project to construct a supercomputer. This technological marvel is intended to enhance the capabilities of their AI chatbot, Grok, for its next iteration.

Musk aims to have this advanced supercomputer operational by the autumn of 2025. He mentioned the possibility of collaborating with Oracle to bring this formidable machine to life. It is expected to be powered by Nvidia’s premier graphics processing units (GPUs), with its scale at least quadruple that of today’s most significant GPU clusters.

This initiative is part of Musk’s broader vision for xAI, a company he founded last year, positioning it as a contender against other major players in the AI field like Microsoft’s OpenAI and Google from Alphabet.

Musk, who also had a hand in founding OpenAI, had earlier pointed out the intensive resources required for training their AI models. Specifically, he noted that the Grok 2 model necessitated using around 20,000 Nvidia GPUs. Looking ahead, he anticipates that developing the Grok 3 model and subsequent versions will require a staggering 100,000 Nvidia chips.
