Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s top men’s doubles combo, pulled out of the Syed Modi International Super 300 badminton competition on Tuesday. The former world number one combo, tipped as favorites to win the men’s doubles title here, had been out from competitive play since the Paris Olympics owing to Satwik’s shoulder ailment. They made a return at the China Masters Super 750 tournament last week, reaching the semifinals. However, B Sumeeth Reddy, who has been teaching the Indian duo ahead of the China Masters and has also sat in on their matches, stated that Satwik has “difficulty” entirely recovering.

“Satwik has recently returned from injury. They’re playing after a long time. They had an extremely busy week in Shenzhen, where they reached the semifinals. It can be tough to fully recuperate, thus they chose to withdraw in the best interests of their bodies and the forthcoming season,” Reddy told PTI.

The top seeds were drawn to face Chen Xu Jun and Guo Ruo Han in the first round, but they gave the Chinese pair a walkover. India’s Mansi Singh, Tanvi Sharma, and Navya Kanderi, as well as China’s Han Qianxi, advanced to the women’s singles main draw.

Mansi of Uttar Pradesh advanced to the women’s singles main draw by defeating Praisha Bonam 21-11 22-24 21-12 in the qualifications. In the men’s individuals, India’s Siddharth Pratap Singh, Saneeth Dayanand, RS Sunil Kumar, and Malaysia’s Shooleh Aidil advanced to the main draw.

In the women’s doubles, Indian pairings Kavya Gupta and Radhika Sharma, Kanika Kanwal and Bharti Pal, and China’s Keng Shu Liang and Wang Ting Ji, as well as Li Hua Zhou and Wang Ting Ji, advanced to the main draw.
