Following Virat Kohli’s and Rohit Sharma’s retirements from T20I cricket, two spots have opened up in India’s top order for the shortest format. Samson, who had previously been on the margins of the XI, has seized this opportunity with both hands due to his regular performances in the shorter format.

The 29-year-old, who captains the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), became the third Test player and fourth overall to score century in successive T20Is. Previously, England’s Phil Salt, South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, and France’s Gustav McKeon accomplished this. The Frenchman was the first player to accomplish this.

Samson was the Rajasthan Royals’ first retention ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, costing Rs 18 crore. Samson, who has guided the franchise to two playoffs in the past three seasons, is one of India’s top T20I batters. Previously, South Africa won the toss and elected to field first against India.
