During his meeting with the Chess Olympiad 2024 double gold champions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with a wonderful gift by chess star Vantika Agarwal. During the discussion, PM Modi mentioned that he organized the ‘Swarnim Chess Mahotsav’ as part of his Khel Mahakumbh project in 2010, when he was Gujarat’s Chief Minister. In the recently ended Chess Olympiad, India’s men’s and women’s teams made history by winning gold medals in their respective categories for the first time, entering the select ranks of countries that have won two gold medals in the same event.

Following this incredible performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian men’s and women’s chess teams at his house on Wednesday to celebrate their victory at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad.  India’s chess future is quite promising. In the men’s tournament, the USA finished second, with Uzbekistan taking bronze. Kazakhstan won the silver medal in the women’s tournament, while the United States secured third place.

In the tournament’s final round, the Indian men’s team, which included D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, beat Slovenia to win gold. Gukesh and Arjun’s victories gave India a 2-0 lead and secured the gold medal. Praggnanandhaa went on to win his game, while Vidit drew his, giving India a 3.5-0.5 victory.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team, which included Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev, won gold by defeating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. Harika, Divya, and Vantika won their final-round bouts, while Vaishali drew with Ulviyya Fataliyeva.
