Manchester United star Paul Scholes believes that his former club is rushing to sign Ruben Amorim, comparing the hoopla around the Portuguese head coach to that of Erik Ten Hag when he came in 2022. “I agree with Ruben Amorim – the hype feels similar to what happened to Erik ten Hag (when he joined Manchester United),” Scholes stated on The Overlap podcast. “I know he’s meant to sign in the days and hours, but Benfica plays at City next week, and Arsenal in the next three or four weeks – it might be a chance to give him a public interview, or see how he handles the media, see how his team plays,” said the agent.
Sporting CP acknowledged in a statement that United intends to pay the head coach’s 10 million euro release clause, indicating that the club is moving quickly to sign the 38-year-old. Amorim is anticipated to be in the stands or the dugout for Sunday’s game against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s projected hiring comes following Manchester United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with the club in 14th position after nine games. Erik Ten Hag was fired by the club and will be replaced by assistant manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who will serve as interim head coach until a permanent manager is appointed.
Scholes went on to list Thomas Tuchel as his top candidate for the position, but the German head coach, who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, has already been appointed by the Football Association to lead the England men’s national team.
“I believe Thomas Tuchel was the appropriate coach for Manchester United, but he has now left for England. He can manage an elite football club and win big games. “He’s been there that done it,” he continued.
