On Sunday, Marseille won 2-1 over Monaco and moved into second place in Ligue 1, thanks to a Mason Greenwood penalty in the 89th minute, while Lyon defeated Nice 4-1 thanks to Alexandre Lacazette. Lille missed an opportunity to climb into third position in Ligue 1 after losing a late equalizer to bottom club Montpellier. After leaders Paris Saint-Germain drew on Saturday, the second and third-placed teams had the opportunity to narrow the distance to the top.
Marseille took advantage of the opportunity, with their narrow victory propelling them ahead of Monaco into second place on goal difference; the two are level on 26 points, seven behind PSG. Four minutes before halftime, Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin scored with a deflected finish. However, Marseille responded in the 53rd minute with Luis Henrique.
A half-blocked cross appeared to be going behind, but it turned on the line to remain in at the near post, and Neal Maupay reacted fast to nudge it across the goalmouth, where the Brazilian headed in his sixth of the season.
The pivotal moment came in the 87th minute when the referee determined that Monaco’s Christian Mawissa had stopped a cross with his hand. Greenwood duly sent the goalie the wrong way, sealing Roberto De Zerbi’s comeback victory. Lacazette scored twice in the first half for Lyon, and he added a penalty in the 69th minute to seal the victory.
Nice’s Sofiane Diop equalized midway through the first period before Lacazette and Jordan Veretout opened up a two-goal lead by halftime. Lyon now has 22 points, two clear of Nice in sixth and one behind fourth-place Lille.
Lacazette put his side ahead after four minutes, tapping home a cross at full stretch. Nice struck back in the 22nd minute, when Diop did well to receive Mohamed-Ali Cho’s back-post cross.
