German Cup: Bayern Munich defeated Mainz 4-0

Jamal Musiala scored three goals in the first half to help Bayern Munich win 4-0 at Mainz and advance to the German Cup’s round of 16. Just two minutes in, Harry Kane found Musiala 10 meters out from goal, and the 21-year-old hammered it home. Musiala scored his second goal on a rebound from a Kane header; the England-raised German forward was offside, but VAR is not used in the German Cup until the next round.

Leroy Sane, a former Manchester City winger, made it three shortly before halftime, and Musiala pounced on a stray ball in the box to score his third and Bayern’s fourth just before the break, completing his first hat trick.

Bayern Munich, the most successful team in German Cup history (with 20 titles to Werder Bremen’s six), has suffered in recent years. Bayern has been ousted at this stage in four of the last five seasons, most recently by Saarbruecken of the third tier. Arminia Bielefeld, from the third level, defeated Union Berlin 2-0 at home to become the only third-tier team to qualify for the round of 16.

Jakob Lemmer’s brace was insufficient for Dynamo Dresden, which fell 3-2 in extra time to Darmstadt, with goals from Aleksandar Vukotic, Tobias Kempe, and Isaac Lidberg. Earlier, Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Omar Marmoush continued his impressive recent form by scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Frankfurt was down to ten men as Arthur Theate was sent off for a handball outside the box only 15 minutes in. Hugo Ekitike of France put the five-time winners ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Gladbach’s Ko Itakura tied things up early in the second half.

“It was a lot of fun — even with 10 men on the pitch we worked hard.” The Egyptian celebrated by wearing a Halloween mask, revealing, “I don’t actually watch horror movies, but I found it in the dressing room and said ‘I’ll take that with me’.” Freiburg defeated three-time champions Hamburg 2-1 at home, thanks to goals from Matthias Ginter and a penalty from Vincenzo Grifo in the first half. Meffert scored in the second half.
