Former world No.1 doubles shuttler Chirag Shetty called the deletion of badminton from the 2026 Commonwealth Games program a mistake, questioning how the organizers could exclude the event’s most popular sport. The 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games announced a drastically reduced roster on Tuesday, removing hockey, shooting, cricket, badminton, and wrestling from the curriculum, a move that will seriously harm India’s medal chances at the quadrennial tournament.
“To be honest, I believe that was a horrible decision. I believe badminton is the most widely watched sport. “It’s one of the most watched sports in the Commonwealth Games,” said Chirag, who, with partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, is the 2022 Birmingham CWG men’s doubles champion.
He stated that the fact that almost all badminton competitions are held in front of a crowded house demonstrates the sport’s popularity in CWG. “I was a part of two editions: the Gold Coast edition and the Birmingham edition. It is extremely tough to secure a seat for any of the rounds. I believe that is a very negative decision for the badminton community in general.
“I’m hoping they (CWG organizers) would look into it and possibly amend it. As members of the badminton community, we’re disappointed. We were very looking forward to defending our title.” The World Championship bronze medalist stated that the national sports federations and the government should address the matter with the highest authority.
“As for boycotting the event, I believe the decision is up to the government and associations. I believe it must get to the highest level. I believe that the higher bodies must take decisive action and escalate the situation to higher authorities. “I believe that all of the sports in which India excels, including badminton, hockey, and wrestling, are being eradicated. I think we must fight for it.
