In a stunning development, the Mizoram Football Association (MFA) has suspended three clubs, 24 players, and three club executives for alleged match-fixing in a recent state competition. Three clubs, Sihphir Venghlun FC, FC Bethlehem, and Ramhlun Athletic FC, as well as three match officials, have been suspended for three years for allegedly influencing Mizoram Premier League match results. “It arrived to the notice of the Mizoram Football Association, after searches with local law enforcement agencies that certain clubs, coaches, and spectators that were recently concluded MPL-11 had indulged in acts of nepotism, for which they have been dismissed after careful deliberations,” according to a statement issued by the state football association.
The Football Association (MFA) banned two competitors for life, four for five years, ten players for three years, and fourteen for one year related to the alleged corruption. “These behaviors featuring a few liars represent a grave breach of our values, undermine the credibility of our sport, and humiliate the fans who fiercely embrace Mizoram Football,” claimed the MFA’s statement.
The MFA has imposed strict penalties on those involved in these activities. Clubs found to be complicit will face measures affecting their participation in future races, and players and officials will face suspensions and other disciplinary measures as deemed appropriate.The three clubs compete in the highest state league, and Sihphir finished in the top four, losing in the semi-finals to eventual winners Aizawl FC.
The MFA requested support from the football community during this difficult period, stating, “We call all football supporters, our partners, and the broader football industry to stand with us as we address this challenging chapter.” The association acknowledged that the controversy could harm the league’s reputation, but emphasized its commitment to moving ahead using transparency and honesty.
