A Mumbai court sentenced Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut to 15 days in jail for defamation against BJP leader Kirit Somaiya’s wife, Medha Somaiya.
The Rajya Sabha member was found guilty by the metropolitan magistrate (Sewree court) for violating Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (defamation) and was fined Rs 25,000.
Medha Somaiya, in her complaint submitted by attorney Vivekanand Gupta, accused Raut of making false and damaging remarks.
She mentioned that Raut had alleged their participation in a Rs 100 crore scandal related to the building and upkeep of certain public restrooms under the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation’s authority. The accused’s remarks to the media are inherently defamatory. The complaint stated that statements were made to damage my reputation in the eyes of the public.
