Omar Abdullah emerged victorious in both constituencies in the latest legislative assembly polls. The Abdullah family is seen as having a strong hold over the Ganderbal seat. During his initial tenure as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, 54-year-old Omar Abdullah served as an MLA from Ganderbal from 2009 to 2014.

After this, the total count of National Conference MLAs in the 95-seat House has decreased to 41. Despite this, the party remains in control with backing from six Congress MLAs, five independents, and one MLA each from the Aam Aadmi Party and the CPI(M).
