Omar Abdullah previously announced that the recently elected members of the NC will gather on Thursday to choose their party leader, followed by a meeting of alliance partners to select their leader in the House. “Next, we will proceed to the Raj Bhavan to assert our claim for forming the government and request the lieutenant governor to schedule a time for the swearing-in ceremony,” he stated.
Following the assembly elections, Jammu and Kashmir gave a significant victory to the National Conference and Congress alliance. Out of the 90 seats in the UT, the NC competed for 51 seats and allocated 32 to its partner, the Congress, with one each going to CPI(M) and the Panthers Party. The two senior partners engaged in a ‘friendly’ competition on five seats.
The National Conference became the largest party by winning 42 seats, which included two seats held by Omar Abdullah. According to the poll results announced on October 8, the BJP secured 29 seats to claim the second position. The alliance, consisting of Congress and CPI(M), won a total of 49 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, surpassing the majority mark of 46.
Omar Abdullah, who previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015, is set to return to the top position once more. Vote counting commenced on the morning of October 9 for 90 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, to form the union.
