Aam Aadmi Party has emerged victorious in the mayoral election for Delhi Municipal Corporation. Mahesh Khinchi, the candidate from AAP, is now the mayor. He won against BJP contender Kishan Lal with a margin of three votes. A grand total of 265 ballots were submitted for the mayoral position. However, two of those votes were deemed ineligible.
Mahesh Khinchi from the Aam Aadmi Party received 133 votes, whereas Kishan Lal from the BJP received 130 votes. Mahesh Khichi is a representative from Devnagar in Karol Bagh. Following Shaili Oberoi, he will now take on the duties of the mayor’s position. Allow us to inform you that Shaili Oberoi’s tenure was prolonged.
Upon winning the mayoral election, Mahesh Khinchi expressed gratitude to all the council members who contributed to his victory. Additionally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. I am grateful to our top leadership from the depths of my heart.
He claimed that only the Aam Aadmi Party is capable of elevating a common worker to such a prestigious position. He commented that the election process went very well and promised that all the council members will dedicate themselves to the progress of Delhi. He stated that the sole focus is on advancing Delhi and we are committed to achieving that goal no matter what.
In April of 2024, the Aam Aadmi Party and BJP announced their candidates for the position of mayor. However, the presiding officer sent back the document stating that it did not include a suggestion from the Chief Minister. Given this, Shelly Oberoi’s term was prolonged until the new mayor was chosen. During that time, Arvind Kejriwal, who was the Chief Minister at the time, was incarcerated. Hence, he was unable to offer any advice in this matter.
In December 2022, during the previous municipal elections, the Aam Aadmi Party secured victory in 134 seats. Following that, ‘AAP’ council member Shelly Oberoi assumed the role of mayor in February of 2023. The mayoral election scheduled for April 2024 was delayed.
