VK Pandian, Naveen Patnaik’s key advisor and a recent member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), announced his departure from active politics following the party’s loss in the Odisha elections, expressing regret for any unintentional harm caused during his political tenure. The announcement came shortly after Naveen Patnaik, the party leader and ex-Chief Minister of Odisha, defended Pandian against criticism related to the election outcomes, commending him for his exceptional performance and integrity.
In a video statement, Pandian emphasized his lack of interest in political positions or power, highlighting his sole motivation to support his mentor, Naveen Patnaik. A former IAS officer from Tamil Nadu, Pandian spoke about his decision to leave the civil service and join the BJD, driven by the desire to assist Patnaik, whom he considered a mentor and akin to family.
Reflecting on his 12-year tenure in the Chief Minister’s office, Pandian cherished the opportunity to work under Patnaik, praising his leadership qualities, ethical standards, and commitment to Odisha’s welfare. Pandian credited his work on significant projects in health, education, poverty alleviation, investment, women’s empowerment, and cultural heritage to Patnaik’s vision for the state, acknowledging his failures in countering political narratives effectively.
Despite his political visibility, Pandian clarified his disinterest in pursuing any political office, emphasizing his background in a modest, rural family in Tamil Nadu and his lifelong aspiration, inspired by family connections to Kendrapada, to enter the IAS and contribute to public service in Odisha, a state that welcomed him with open arms and where he dedicated his efforts to serving its people.
