AAP’s national convenor and previous CM of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, has faced a significant setback in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi degree case from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court denied his request to halt the defamation case, allowing the criminal defamation case against Kejriwal in Gujarat to proceed.
Previously, Arvind Kejriwal, who was Chief Minister at the time, submitted a request to the Supreme Court to pause the proceedings, questioning the summons given by the lower court.
Before, his request had been denied by the Gujarat High Court as well. Before, in April 2024, the Supreme Court had dismissed a similar request from AAP leader Sanjay Singh, and now Kejriwal’s plea has also been denied. It should be noted that Gujarat University Registrar Piyush Patel has taken legal action against the statements made by Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh.
Arvind Kejriwal requested for the defamation case against him to be put on hold. Justices Rishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti explained that a different bench of the Supreme Court had dismissed Sanjay Singh’s request in the identical case on April 8.
The bench stated that we must use the same approach that will need to be implemented. Previously, in February, the Gujarat High Court had ordered that Sanjay Singh and Arvind Kejriwal’s petition be reviewed.
The petitioners declined to comply. He asked for summons to be issued against him in the Singh and Kejriwal case on behalf of Gujarat University by the lower court, then filed a revision against the order dismissing the petitions in the Sessions Court. A petition was filed in the High Court challenging this decision.
