Shrinivas R Kulkarni, a distinguished professor of astronomy with Indian roots in the United States, has been honored with the esteemed Shaw Prize in Astronomy in recognition of his pioneering work in uncovering the secrets of millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other transient or variable cosmic phenomena.
Kulkarni holds the position of George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science in the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology. Alongside him, the Shaw Prize has also been awarded to Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the US, who have jointly received the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, and to Peter Sarnak, another US-based scientist honored with the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences.
