During the 2020 riots in North-East Delhi, Shahrukh Pathan was denied bail by the Delhi High Court for allegedly aiming a gun at a police officer. This incident is connected to the violence that occurred in the Jafrabad region. It consists of grave accusations such as inciting violence and trying to kill someone. The High Court also denied Shahrukh Pathan’s bail request in January 2022.
Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma rejected Shahrukh Pathan’s bail petition, which challenged the lower court’s December 14 decision denying him bail. Pathan’s lawyer contended that his client was accused of trying to kill by supposedly aiming and shooting a gun at a Delhi Police head constable, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, despite him already being in custody for over four years.
It was contended in front of the trial court that there are still approximately 90 witnesses left to be examined and Pathan cannot remain in jail indefinitely. Shahrukh Pathan was taken into custody on 3 March 2020 from Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh and is currently being held in a jail in Delhi.
Shadab Ahmed, a defendant in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, has been given an eight-day interim bail by the Karkardooma Court. Shadab is facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Ahmed had requested bail in order to cover the expenses of his younger sister’s wedding.
Tahir Hussain, a former AAP councilor involved in the conspiracy case linked to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, challenged the UAPA accusations in Karkardooma Court. ASJ Sameer Bajpai’s court has scheduled the matter for October 23.
Violent clashes occurred in North-East Delhi on 24 February 2020, resulting in the deaths of 53 individuals and leaving over 700 others injured.
