A major step forward in India’s drive for scientific and technical growth under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) was taken on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi electronically inaugurated three PARAM Rudra supercomputers.
At an estimated cost of ₹130 crore, the supercomputers called PARAM Rudra were constructed in-house and are currently being used in Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata to propel innovative research in a variety of scientific fields.
“There is no sector which does not rely on technology and computing capability… In this revolution, our share should not be in bits and bytes but in terabytes and petabytes. Therefore, this achievement proves that we are moving in the right direction at the right pace,” PM Modi stated.
As part of India’s effort to become self-sufficient in high-performance computing (HPC), the PARAM Rudra supercomputers will facilitate cutting-edge scientific research across a range of disciplines.
The new device will be used by Pune’s Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) to study celestial phenomena like Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).
The Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in Delhi will advance research in atomic physics and material science, while the S N Bose Centre in Kolkata will concentrate on earth sciences, physics, and cosmology. It further stated that cutting-edge research in fields like physics, cosmology, and earth sciences will be spearheaded by the S N Bose Centre in Kolkata.
“With Param Rudra Supercomputers and HPC system, India takes significant step towards self-reliance in computing and driving innovation in science and tech,” PM Modi stated on X.
According to Modi, these supercomputers not only signify the progress of technology but also have a significant impact on achieving the goals of the “last person” in society.
The launch was scheduled to take place in Pune, but the prime minister was forced to postpone his travel because of the city’s intense rains. According to officials, Modi was going to inaugurate a Metro rail line and start development projects valued at ₹22,600 crore.
