After a decade, Jammu and Kashmir has elected a new government with Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister. Despite this, terrorist attacks in the Union Territory have continued to rise instead of declining. Nineteen individuals have lost their lives in various terrorist attacks in the past two weeks. Another terrorist attack occurred in Gulmarg, Kashmir on the night of 24 October, resulting in the deaths of two army porters and two soldiers.
This incident occurred in a popular tourist destination as well. Furthermore, a significant amount of military personnel are stationed in this location. Despite this, there are still questions being raised about how the terrorists were able to reach the army and target them.
On October 20, a terrorist attack occurred at a tunnel construction site in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district. During this assault, six external workers and a nearby physician lost their lives. The individuals were shot at by the terrorists, resulting in the majority of them perishing immediately. On the 18th, a worker from Bihar was also fatally injured in Shopian. In the midst of these events, LG Manoj Sinha has instructed security forces to be rigorous and the police and army to collaborate in operations. Nevertheless, there is currently no visible control.
The confrontation between the military and terrorists yesterday has heightened the worries even more. Concerns have been raised by security forces in various regions such as Baramulla, Poonch, Shopian, Ganderbal, and Kashmir. Currently, security forces are carrying out search operations in numerous locations and there has been a rise in camping in several areas.
On October 9, the body of a soldier who had been missing was found with bullet holes. Reports indicated that the soldier was abducted by militants in Anantnag. In the end, they only found his body. Hilal Ahmed Bhat has been recognized as the soldier.
In the meantime, CM Omar Abdullah had meetings with Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday. While this was happening, he insisted on the state’s status being restored.
Simultaneously, a BJP leader unequivocally stated that Jammu and Kashmir will not be granted full statehood until the security situation shows improvement. He also highlighted the rise in terrorist attacks following the arrival of the Omar Abdullah administration. The Pakistan-based terrorist groups are said to be feeling anxious because of the peaceful elections and government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, leading them to target civilians. Because of this, such a scenario has emerged.
