DY Chandrachud’s term as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will expire in November. He has endorsed the name of his potential replacement. In his recommendation to the central government, CJI Chandrachud stated that the upcoming Chief Justice of India will be Justice Sanjeev Khanna.

Allow us to inform you that the current Chief Justice of India will step down on 10 November 2024. As per customs, the CJI suggests his successor’s name only if requested by the Law Ministry, which is why he has suggested Justice Sanjiv Khanna for the CJI position.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna is at the top of the seniority list. Consequently, his name has been put forth. It should also be mentioned that Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who is 64 years old, will serve as CJI for approximately 6 months.

We want to inform you that Justice Khanna’s retirement is scheduled for 13 May 2025. As a Supreme Court judge, he has issued 65 rulings. Throughout his time in office, he has been a member of 275 benches.

When it comes to Justice Sanjiv Khanna, he has served as a judge in the Delhi High Court for a period of 14 years. His birthdate is 14 May 1960. He attended the Campus Law Center at Delhi University to study law. Following his graduation in 1983, he became a registered lawyer with the Delhi Bar Council. In 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court.

There was a dispute surrounding the nomination of Sanjeev Khanna as a Supreme Court judge. The decision to appoint him as a Supreme Court judge disregarding 32 other judges stirred up a great deal of controversy. On 10 January 2019, the Collegium made the decision to substitute him with Justice Maheshwari and elevate Justice Khanna to the 33rd seniority position. This was also given the green light by the then President Ram Nath Kovind.
