The remains of six individuals who went missing in Manipur’s Jiribam area are currently in the morgue at Assam’s Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), despite the completion of post-mortem examinations, as their relatives are hesitant to proceed with the final funeral rites. Sources reported that the sixth corpse found in the Barak river in Assam’s Cachar district was subjected to a post-mortem examination at SMCH on Monday.
A source with knowledge of the situation stated that the post-mortem examination of all six bodies was conducted at SMCH. The doctors who are worried have also completed the report. Nevertheless, the official mentioned that there was uncertainty regarding the timing for transporting the bodies to Manipur for the final rites to be performed by their relatives.
10 militants were killed in a confrontation between security forces and militants in Jiribam district of Manipur on November 11. A few hours later, three women and three children who resided in a relief camp disappeared.
The bodies of two women and a child were found in the Barak river in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday, while the bodies of a woman and two children were discovered in the Jiri river in Jiribam on Friday night.
It is claimed that the militants murdered these individuals following their abduction. Since May of last year, over 220 individuals have lost their lives in ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki groups.
After the examination of the bodies of six individuals who went missing from Manipur’s Jiribam district was finished, the bodies remain in the morgue of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam because their relatives are refusing to conduct their final ceremonies. In the meantime, it was reported by authorities that the group formed in Jiribam following the murder has agreed to transport the corpses from Silchar in Assam to their hometowns in Manipur for the final ceremonies.
