Kapil Sibal, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, commended Chief Justice DY Chandrachud during his farewell event on Friday. During the farewell event held by the Supreme Court Bar Association, Kapil Sibal remarked that while we might not see eye to eye, we should commend you for your willingness to hear them out and make a choice. We would like to inform you that DY Chandrachud stepped down on Friday as the 50th leader of the Indian judiciary.

During the farewell ceremony, Kapil Sibal remarked that in an imperfect world and an imperfect judiciary, one assesses a judge by how often they have compromised on perfection to safeguard life, liberty, and equality.

He stated that this is the criterion by which we will recall you. A court is not established by the structure or the architecture of the building, but by the efforts of the judges to meet their constitutional obligations and safeguard civil rights, and within this framework, CJI Chandrachud made some groundbreaking rulings.

Kapil Sibal stated that the CJI was prepared to handle intricate matters. I have to admit that former Chief Justices avoided tackling those matters for years… be it Article 370, same-sex marriage, electoral bonds, or any significant issue that impacted our reality, and you were prepared to confront it and did so with impressive clarity. He stated that while we might not see eye to eye, we must commend you for being willing to hear them out and make a decision.

Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal questioned what the standard is for following a judge’s path as a judge. We can critique a judge as much as we desire. You must assess that individual in light of the current era we are experiencing. When we talk about him, his conduct and friendly demeanor serve as one of the best indicators of this nation.

Kapil Sibal mentioned that YV Chandrachud served as a judge for 17 years and as CJI for 7 years, and he had the chance to present cases before him. I want to express that CJI DY Chandrachud has indeed excelled compared to him (former CJI YV Chandrachud).

Kapil Sibal stated that 50 to 90 million individuals experience disabilities, and you were the initial CJI to address this matter, pushing it forward at a rapid pace. You permitted others to critique, and what could be braver than that?
