Health Ministry offers states guidelines for addressing significant issues.

Due to the growing danger of air pollution in various cities across the nation, including the capital Delhi, the Health Ministry has urged state governments to promptly take action to prevent its severe health consequences. The Secretary of the Health Ministry, Punya Salila Srivastava, sent out a letter detailing the growing health effects of air pollution in the nation.

The letter mentioned that in recent years, air pollution has led to numerous significant issues. During the winter season, the air quality index in the nation frequently reaches levels ranging from poor to severe. This can result in chronic illnesses that impact the respiratory system, heart, and brain.

The Director General of Health Services, Atul Goyal, urged states on October 19 to ramp up public awareness efforts, enhance health workers’ abilities, and boost involvement in monitoring air pollution-related illnesses.

Besides that, the Union Health Ministry has suggested creating localized action plans at the district and city levels to address the impacts of air pollution. In addition, the ministry has also discussed expanding the hospital network to monitor illnesses linked to air pollution as part of NPCCHH.

The Health Ministry of the Union has given guidance to all states and union territories on this matter, advising actions to enhance the current healthcare system and raise awareness among at-risk populations.

The letter mentions that air pollution affects children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions more severely. Hence, priority should be placed on raising awareness for these groups.
