Doctors saved patient's life with ECMO technology.

Doctors at AIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar have made a significant breakthrough in the medical field. Shubhkant Sahu, 25 years old and from Nayagarh district of Odisha, was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. His heart, which had stopped beating for 80 minutes, was revived using ECMO technology. This event is regarded as a significant milestone in the field of medicine.

Shubhkant was taken to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on October 1 morning due to severe breathing difficulties. At 10 am while receiving treatment, his heart stopped beating, putting him in critical condition. The doctors attempted to resuscitate his heartbeat with CPR for 40 minutes, but were unable to succeed. The doctors were faced with just two choices in this scenario. Either pronounce him deceased or utilize ECMO technique.

ECMO serves as a temporary replacement for the heart and lungs, acting as a special medical device. 40 minutes passed before Shubhkant’s heart started beating again following the initiation of ECMO. Yet, his heart ceased beating for a miraculous 80-minute span.

Shubhkant was placed on ECMO for a period of 30 hours followed by being put on a ventilator for 2 weeks while being monitored. At last, Shubhkant regained awareness and his eyes fluttered open. His state is currently typical and he is in full health.

As per AIIMS Bhubaneswar doctors, this is the inaugural case of its type in Odisha and the eastern region of India. This amazing rescue has given the medical community renewed optimism. Shubhkant’s family showed appreciation to the doctors and all the medical staff. This event has sparked motivation within the medical field not only in Odisha, but throughout India. This accomplishment demonstrates the power of contemporary medical advancements and the dedication of healthcare professionals.
