Officials reported that a 45-year-old woman drowned in a drainage system in the MIDC region of Andheri after heavy rainfall in Mumbai caused extensive waterlogging in various areas on Wednesday.

They mentioned that the incident took place close to gate no. 8 of MIDC, Andheri East, at approximately 9.20 pm. The authorities were notified and quickly responded to the scene to rescue the woman known as Vimal Anil Gaikwad.

BMC officials verified that the Mumbai fire brigade rescued the victim and transferred her to Cooper Hospital, where she was declared deceased.

The BMC released a statement reporting that a 45-year-old woman named Vimal Gaikwad died after falling into an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. The Mumbai fire brigade saved her and brought her to Cooper Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

BMC Establishes Panel of 3 Members

BMC established a three-person committee led by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner to investigate the incident that resulted in the death of a woman. It was also mentioned that the investigative committee includes a fire officer and a city infrastructure engineer.

The municipality pointed fingers at the Aqua Line metro project, attributing the incident that raised public safety concerns to it.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning of intense rainfall in Mumbai and nearby areas until 8:30 am on Thursday. Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are among the other districts on high alert.

Mumbra Bypass Experiences Landslide

A landslide was noted at the Mumbra bypass region, causing a disruption in the city’s traffic for over three hours on Wednesday.

Fire officer Swapnil Sarnobat stated that the traffic congestion lasted for approximately 3 hours. In this time frame, the traffic department also managed traffic on a single side. Luckily, there are no reports of any fatalities.

Due to heavy rain, Mumbai Police and BMC have advised citizens to stay indoors as much as they can.

Due to the ongoing red alert and continuous rain in Mumbai, residents are advised to leave their homes only when absolutely necessary. In a post on X, they advised against visiting coastal and low-lying areas. Schools in Maharashtra are shut down today.

Due to the heavy rainfall in the city, schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will be shut on Thursday. Previously, BMC officials had issued a comparable directive for the shutdown of educational institutions in Mumbai.

Dr Suhas Diwase, the Pune District collector, issued the directive in response to an orange alert for rainfall along with lightning and thunderstorms issued by the Met department on Thursday.

In the same way, Deepak Kesarkar, the School Education Minister and guardian minister for Mumbai city, announced a school closure as a precaution due to a red alert forecasting very heavy rainfall in the city on Thursday.
