Days before Jharkhand MP and Union Secretary of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received an extortion mail seeking Rs 50 lakh, a 46-year-old man was detained in connection with the case. The culprit, Ranchi resident Minajul Ansari, was apprehended Monday morning and is being transported to Delhi on transit remand, according to a senior police officer. According to police sources, Ansari sent the message to teach his son-in-law a lesson.
According to a police source, on Friday at 7 p.m., the minister got the extortion SMS and notified the Barakhamba Road police station, prompting a rapid inquiry conducted by SHO Mahavir Singh. Police traced the phone number to Ranchi and arrested Ansari.
During questioning, authorities said Ansari revealed his crime was motivated by a family dispute. He stated that his son-in-law had suspected his daughter had been having an affair and confronted Ansari about it, sparking a commotion.
Ansari, humiliated, claimed he was enraged and fled the house with his daughter. Later, he determined to exact retribution. According to police, the accused sent the message to the minister using a phone and SIM card purchased in his name for his daughter by his son-in-law.
