On Sunday, Delhi Police arrested a former police officer who allegedly disguised as a high-earning professional on marriage websites and deceived scores of women over seven years.
Manoj Gahlyan, 35, comes from Jorashi Khalsa village in Haryana’s Panipat district. During interrogation, Gahlyan admitted to cheating women in this manner since 2017, according to authorities.
Vichitra Veer, a deputy commissioner of Police (West Delhi), claimed Monday that Gahlyan used to find unsuspecting ladies and “lure them by pretending to be a high-salary manager in a reputed office, earning Rs 15-20 lakh.” He would meet them and gain their trust before stealing their credit or debit card information to siphon off money.”
The police estimate he targeted hundreds of women, although many victims are unlikely to have reported the incident out of shame or fear. He was apprehended following a raid on Northeast Delhi’s Usmanpur neighborhood by a squad led by Inspector Dharmender (Cyber West). Five debit cards and a mobile phone purchased with the complainant’s card were seized from him.
On November 23, a victim attended the Cyber (West) police station and filed a report. After meeting her on a matrimonial website, the accused reportedly obtained her bank account and credit card information over time. He later used the information to carry out unauthorized transactions, according to the police.
