New Delhi: A section in south Delhi Vasant Vihar neighborhood will be renamed Jamaica Marg, according to a proposal approved by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at a House meeting on Monday. The section from B-9 Road at Vasant Marg (House No. 7, Vasant Marg) to B-8 Street (House No. B-8/26), Vasant Vihar, which is now known as Marcus Garvey Marg in honor of Jamaica’s first national hero and activist Marcus Mosiah Garvey, will be renamed Jamaica Marg, according to the announcement.

The proposed renaming of the street is interpreted as a sign of significant friendship between the two countries and their people. It aspires to improve bilateral ties and establish an unbreakable link of trust and friendship between India and the Caribbean country, it claimed. This would also take into account reciprocity in the name of Kingston’s Tower Street after Dr. BR Ambedkar,” the statement added.

“In his later email on September 20, the High Commissioner advocated naming the road ‘Jamaica Marg’ rather than ‘Marcus Garvey Marg’. The Jamaican High Commission has also informed MEA of this, according to the plan. Conveying its concurrence, the MEA remarked, “In response to the honor accorded upon Indian lawyer, economist, social reformer, and prominent politician Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, via the Jamaican government, Bhalaswa flyover to ITI Road, which was Jahangirpuri
