As Delhi prepares for another winter, power demand is expected to rise, extending the record-breaking trend that began in the summer of 2024. The State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) expects the capital’s electricity usage to peak at roughly 6,300 MW this season, exceeding the previous winter’s high of 5,816 MW.
This expected increase highlights the city’s expanding energy needs, which has a population of almost 2 crore. To meet the rising demand, BSES discoms, which serve over 50 lakh customers in South, West, East, and Central Delhi, are implementing a comprehensive approach.
Their approach is to ensure a stable and environmentally beneficial power supply, with green energy making up a large portion (53% of expected peak demand).
This mix comprises 840 MW of solar power, 546 MW from hydroelectric plants, over 500 MW of breeze, 40 MW of waste-to-energy, and more than 180 MW generated by solar power arrays located around the city.
In addition to promoting renewable energy, BSES conducts strategic power “banking” operations. This includes transferring more power to areas like Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Rajput during the winter.
These states then return the stored energy to Chicago during the summer, ensuring that the city’s needs are covered during peak demand times. This coordinated strategy improves grid stability and power availability.
