A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with a bogus bomb threat that sparked panic at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and disrupted security protocols. The accused told the police that he was influenced by recent hoax bomb threats and wanted to bring attention to himself.
The accused has been identified as Shubham Upadhyay, a resident of Uttam Nagar. He was arrested after an inquiry revealed that the phony bomb threat originated on his social media account. The incident occurred overnight on October 25 and 26, when two social media threats threatened bombs at IGI Airport.
In response, airport security triggered routine measures and worked with local law enforcement to investigate the incident. A case was also filed under the relevant sections of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Civil Aviation Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act.
Initial investigations indicated that the threat was a hoax, but the Delhi Police conducted a thorough investigation to determine the source of the threats. Using technical surveillance, they linked the account back to Upadhyay, who was eventually detained at his home. During interrogation, Upadhyay admitted to sending the messages, stating he was influenced by similar instances on the news and was looking for attention, police claimed.
Delhi Police assured the public that the airport is still secure, with increased security measures and constant surveillance in place. A police spokeswoman further advised individuals to report any strange or suspicious conduct, emphasizing the significance of community collaboration in preventing such incidents.
Upadhyay is still in police detention as the inquiry continues. The authorities are conducting further investigations into his motivations and social media behavior. The police have highlighted the serious repercussions of hoax threats, warning that those involved will face strict legal action.
