New Delhi: As Delhi’s air quality fell to the ‘ severe plus’ level this year, disrupting flight operations, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has built special enclosures for travelers stranded on flights due to fog, bad weather, or technical issues. According to officials, the program allows fliers to return to the terminal without having to worry about security measures.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited that operates and manages the Delhi Airport, is constructing dedicated enclosures at all three terminals for both domestic and international travelers. The enclosures, which will seat 55 to 120 passengers at a time, will be positioned at bus boarding gates and various aerobridges at Terminal 3. Transfer locations at Terminal 2.
The enclosures will only be utilized as a security processing area; after that, passengers will be allowed to enter the airport’s Security Hold Area (SHA), where they will have access to all facilities including meals.
According to Delhi airport officials, only travelers and airline workers who are stranded within the flights would be permitted to enter the enclosures. Officials claimed that officers from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) are also being deployed at the enclosures to ensure safety and security.
They also stated that Private Security Agency (PSA) staff will examine travelers’ documents before allowing them to enter the zones. Officials added the authorities are also planning to provide vital services such as bathrooms and vending machines at the enclosures.
