The drive began Saturday in the aftermath of a massive fire in the state-run Maharani Laxmibai Medical College Hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi Friday that claimed the lives of 11 newborns.

According to an official, an assessment of 50 government and commercial hospitals in Gautam Buddh Nagar discovered that up to ten institutions lacked a fire No-objection Certificate (NoC). The defaulters have received a reminder to get the requisite documentation.

The push began Saturday in the aftermath of a major fire at the state-run Maharani Laxmibai Medical College Hospital in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday that claimed the lives of 11 newborn babies. “Among the ten hospitals are Super Speciality Paediatric Hospital & Post Graduate Teaching Institute; Gautam Buddh Nagar District Hospital; and Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital. Gautam Buddh Nagar has 185 hospitals. We will scan the others over the next 4-5 days,” said Pradeep Kumar, Chief Fire Officer.

Water seepage at the Paediatric Hospital can cause problems for the fire system, he warned, adding, “The building has no smoke detection system, and the exhaust fans are not connected  There is no right way to rescue in such a situation.”

A letter was also addressed to the hospital’s director to repair the established fire system. “This was the sixth reminder to the hospital.” Dr Arun Kumar Singh, director of the Paediatric Hospital, stated that the fire officers’ team identified some safety procedures that were not being followed. “We have been given fifteen days.
