A freelance event manager in Delhi was detained on Monday after reportedly defrauding three persons by selling bogus Diljit Dosanjh concert tickets worth more than Rs 10 lakh, according to the police. According to the police, the accused, Kaushika Raj, 29, lived a luxury life at hotels in Bengaluru, Goa, and Mumbai with the swindled money. “He used the money at clubs to buy an iPhone worth Rs 1.35 lakh and an Apple Watch worth Rs 50,000,” said Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South.
The scam was discovered after one of the victims, a Neb Sarai resident, phoned a Paytm insider to confirm the authenticity of the tickets, according to the sources. When he discovered the tickets were bogus, he filed a police report.
Raj, a BTech dropout, impersonated a Paytm employee and originally sent the complaint five complimentary tickets to gain his trust. The victim went on to purchase 69 more tickets from Raj for his family and friends, eventually paying him Rs 4.78 lakh.
“After receiving the money, he turned off his phone and left Delhi,” Chauhan explained.
Diljit Dosanjh is set to appear in Delhi on October 26. The police followed Raj down to Nizamuddin Railway Station, where he was detained and his phone, smartwatch, and five debit cards were taken.
The authorities investigated Raj and the victim’s financial transactions and narrowed it down to a single bank account to which Raj had moved all of his earnings. The police also revealed that Rs 4.61 lakh was sent to the account in 16 installments and then withdrawn by Raj using a self-cheque. According to the authorities, Raj, originally from Muzaffarpur in Bihar, came up with the concept of selling bogus tickets to make quick money.
